Landscape and networks

Diamond Open Access in Switzerland is growing. As the commercial academic publishing landscape is becoming increasingly unsustainable and disparate, Switzerland, like other countries, witnesses an increased interest from researchers in alternative publishing possibilities, including preprints, Green and Diamond Open Access. Institutional publishing services providers (IPSPs) see more journals being established and flipped; there is also a rise in inquiries concerning Diamond OA book publishing options. Concurrently, independent initiatives such as DOACH, diamondplus.ch, and CoDOA aim to stabilize, contribute to and support this developing landscape.

Swiss Diamond OA profits greatly from and is in exchange with international Diamond OA structures and initiatives, such as OPERAS, DIAMAS, PKP and other National Capacity Centres:

Diamond OA initiatives and projects in Switzerland

  • Swiss Higher Education Institutions endorse the Diamond Action Plan for Diamond Open Access
  • From 2022 to 2025, the swissuniversities-funded PLATO project examined the Diamond OA publishing landscape in Switzerland in order to devise sustainable models for funding and supporting Diamond OA publishing. The PLATO reports are available on Zenodo: https://zenodo.org/communities/plato-ch
  • CoDOA-CH is PLATO’s successor project and stands for “Creating a Sustainable Funding Scheme for Diamond Open Access through Institutional Collaboration in Switzerland”. The project seeks to devise a collaborative process with the aim of setting up a national Diamond OA consortium to enable a long-term and sustainable consortial funding scheme for high-quality scholar-led and non-profit Diamond OA journals in which researchers at Swiss research institutions publish: https://codoa.ch/
